Time flies when you’re having fun (we still can’t believe that we’re in our third week), especially with all of our activities! The students had an urban campout yesterday with s’mores, hot chocolate, games, and songs. Volleyball has been a favorite activity for many of our students.
Today, our students played lawn games, made their own jewelry, and climbed the Sather Tower (UC Berkeley’s most famous symbol). Students climbed their way to the top of Sather Tower for a view of the Bay Area from the observation platform. Fun fact: It is the third tallest bell and clock tower in the world.
Although it’s only Tuesday, it’s been a busy week! See below for photos, and stay tuned for a recap of our upcoming activities and excursions.
From the desk of the director:
Where has the time gone? How is it possible that we are already beginning our 3rd week of Summerfuel Berkeley and heading into our final weekend together. We have shared so many moments and made memories that will last for years and we still have so many fun activities and excursions ahead.
On Sunday night a group of students worked hard to coordinate, plan and head out on a special excursion – SHAWN MENDES at the Oracle Arena in Oakland. Students commuted together with staff on a bus and sang loud and proud throughout the whole concert and the bus ride back! Their energy level was high and they had a blast!
We have lots of exciting events coming up throughout this week including: Paint the City, our third RA Night, Trivia Night, A trip to the Mission District, a Trip into Chinatown as well as a few more San Francisco outings for students to see more of the city of San Francisco. On Sunday, we will all travel to the beach in Santa Cruz and enjoy our final weekend day together surfing, playing games and catching the rays.
We are fun. We are crazy. We ARE Summerfuel Berkeley 2019! We are having the summer of our lives.
The Summerfuel council is a group of students that volunteer, are chosen, or elected on behalf of their RA group. Each member of the council acts as a liaison between their peers not only in their RA group but also for their classmates and the Senior Staff. They meet to discuss ideas and concerns that will help make the Summerfuel experience better for all. The council previously met for the first time to discuss different topics with the Director, Kristal and Assistant Director, Jim at Brewed Awakening. The group had many interesting ideas that will be helpful for future events that will take place during our time together!
A big thank you to our 2019 Summerfuel Berkeley representatives!
The students enjoyed this fine Saturday at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, CA. Feeling like Batman and Superman – they soared through the skies with happiness on adrenaline-filled roller coasters. After a day full of loops through their roller coaster ride, they also came across some animal exhibits. Along with a bunch of roller coasters, Six Flags has a small zoo like location in the park where visitors can enjoy and learn about various animals. Below are a few moments we captured of our beloved staff and students having the time of their lives!
On Sunday the group was off to Palo Alto to visit the Stanford Campus! This was a relaxing day with a picnic lunch, games on the lawn, shopping, and tours around the beautiful campus. After returning to Berkeley, a small group headed off to the Oracle Arena in Oakland for the Shawn Mendes Concert. What a weekend!
Party Bus to Shawn Mendes Concert!
This Friday started with another beautiful day in California. Students were up for breakfast and off to morning classes for the final time this week.
After lunch students participated in their workshop electives. The hiking workshop took the Grizzly Peak Trail to an amazing viewpoint overlooking the Bay Area. After the electives, students had some down-time to relax before the big activity of the day, the baseball game!
At 5 PM the group met for a quick snack and left to take the metro to the Oakland Athletics game as they took on the Chicago White Sox. Students enjoyed witnessing the action at the Oakland Coliseum and spending the evening with their friends. There were plenty of home runs and our students made it on the Jumbotron several times! Summerfuel students were some of the loudest in the ballpark for this game. It was a 5 – 1 win for the Athletics
This weekend there are some great excursions coming up including the much anticipated trip to 6 Flags, and a relaxing Sunday visiting the Stanford Univeristy Campus in Palo Alto. Stay tuned for more updates!
This week in classes at Summerfuel Berkeley:
One week of classes are now behind us and as we enter into week there are many exciting things planned. This week students are touring the Henry H. Wheeler Brain Imaging Center, GLU game design, Chabot Space Center, Berkeley Botanical Gardens and the Baolt Law Building here on campus.
Students in Essay Writing have begun to read the Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, and planning their introductions for an essay assignment.
The Computer Science and App Design class are presenting new App designs they have created, which we could possibly see in the future!
Future architects are busy sketching buildings based on photos they took while touring around Berkeley campus.
Game Designers are testing out live games they created themselves and gearing up to visit GLU Mobile in San Francisco.
Robotics class is in the process of programming using technology.
During our workshop times students in the Community Service workshop spent time at the UC Botanical Gardens and the photography students took photos around campus.
Happy Tuesday! Our afternoon and evening activities are opportunities for students to get to spend time together and try something new. Today’s activities included a Spa Day and Lip Sync Battle. At the spa, students did face masks, painted their nails, and relaxed. One of our top rules for self care is to stay hydrated! We emphasize the importance of drinking water throughout the day.
We ended the night with a Lip Sync Battle! Judges scored on creativity, stage presence, and audience response. Students showed off their singing and dance skills in a competition.
We have a sunset hike tomorrow and letters and yoga on Thursday. See photos and stay up to date by following us on Instagram – @sfberkeley19.
